Dog Friendly Hiking Trails in Massies Mill, VA

Crozet Railroad Tunnel is a dog-friendly activity in Afton, VA, that is a 4.5 mile trail in its entirety. Start at either trailhead (address will take you to the east trailhead). There are information markers along the trail so you can learn all about the tunnel and the surrounding area. After the first half mile you'll be at the entrance to an old railroad tunnel. BRING A FLASHLIGHT OR HEADLAMP! You and Fido can walk the 1-mile tunnel and continue on or turn around. Dogs must be on a leash. The trail leading up to the tunnel is quite wide so plenty of space. Inside the tunnel is a bit narrower but easily manageable.

Ridgeview Park is a dog-friendly, 85-acre park in Waynesboro, VA with a tree-lined path along the South River. The park also features gardens and nature trails. Bring a picnic to share with Fido in the picnic shelter or spread a blanket on the grass! The park is open from sunrise to sunset.

Bring Fido to the pet-friendly and majestic Crabtree Falls, which is the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, and is located in Montebello, VA. This waterfall features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones that fall a total distance of 1,200 feet. The first overlook is just a few hundred feet from the upper parking lot along a gentle, paved trail, making it an excellent stopover for travelers of all ages and abilities. The more adventuresome hiker may continue along the 2.5-mile Crabtree Falls Trail to four other overlooks offering spectacular views of the falls and the Tye River Valley. Leashed dogs are welcome.

The Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. The dog-friendly South River Greenway runs for 1.2 miles along the South River from the Loth Springs Parking area on Arch Avenue, behind the YMCA, to the Port Republic neighborhood. Parking at this end is available at the Shiloh Baptist Church auxiliary parking lot right at the trail head. There is also parking available downtown at the Arch Avenue Parking Lot and the Invista lot. Dogs should remain on a leash.
