Description
Hirz Lookout is an historic 1949 steel K-brace tower that stands 20 feet above ground level overlooking the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake and surrounding mountains. The lookout is open to the public from May 1 to October 15. The maximum capacity is four people. There are two twin beds and 2 additional mattresses in lookout cabin. The lookout has no cooking facilities, water, or electricity, but there is a separate vault toilet building. You will need to supply your own linens, water, dishes, utensils, cookware and heat. Please bring garbage bags. Facility is Pack it in, Pack it out. Check in time is 2:00 p.m., checkout is 11:00 a.m. Rental is for 1 day minimum and a 4 day maximum stay per year. Site access is difficult. SUVs are recommended for the 5 mile dirt road, and hiking 1/4 mile on a steep, slippery trail is required to reach the lookout. Wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution, especially with children.
