Pets in the Cabin

KLM welcomes small cats and dogs into the economy cabin on most of their flights, and in business class on flights within Europe. Dogs are welcome in the cabin if the combined weight of the pet and carrier is under 18 lbs (8 kg). Each passenger is permitted to travel with 1 pet. To bring your cat or dog with you, you’ll pay a fee of EUR 75 to EUR 400 per one-way.

Pets in Checked Baggage

Pets and carriers weighing more than 18 lbs (8 kg) can be transported in the hold with KLM. To travel as checked baggage in the hold, pets and carriers can weigh a maximum 165 lbs (75 kg). Passengers can check up to 3 pets in the hold. If you have a transfer time of more than 3 hours, or your flight is operated with a Boeing 787-9 or 787-10 aircraft, then you are not allowed to travel with a pet in the hold. To bring your cat or dog with you, you’ll pay a fee of EUR 75 to EUR 400 per one-way.

Pets in Cargo

Pets that exceed the maximum weight for traveling in the hold, those traveling alone, or animals that are heading to countries where they require pets to be transported as freight, can all go through Air France-KLM Cargo instead, where animals are shipped with a special cargo agent. Pets and carriers weighing more than 165 lbs (75 kg) or exceeding 115" (292 cm) in height must travel this way. On some types of aircraft, the kennel must not be larger than 97" (247 cm). You can contact them directly at 800-556-9000 to find out prices, availability, and conditions for your pet's travel plans.

Carrier Guidelines

For animals traveling in the cabin, carriers must be soft-sided and no bigger than 18" x 11" x 9" (46 cm x 28 cm x 24 cm). Pets must be able to stand up and lay down comfortably inside. For pets traveling in the hold, carriers must not exceed the dimensions of 48" x 32" x 35" (122 cm x 81 cm x 89 cm) on KLM flights and 40" x 27" x 30" (102 cm x 69 cm x 76 cm) on KLM Cityhopper flights. Carriers must alsohave a fiberglass or rigid plastic shell, wheels must be removed or blocked with duct tape, the door must have a centralized locking system, and the two parts of the carrier must be joined by bolts. It must be large enough for your pet to stand up without touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down in a natural position.

    Great experience, kind staff

I flew with my cat in the cabin from Netherlands to Spain. It was an easy process and the staff were incredibly kind when they noticed there was a cat onboard.

    Forced customers to pay broker

Klm is forcing everyone to pay a broker when importing pet in US. Law doesn’t request that for personal pet, but this greedy corporation do it anyway to ad another $325 to your bill!
    Stay away from klm

    Amazing service!!!

I flew with my Labrador mix dog from Israel to Mexico, through Amsterdam. In Amsterdam this airline has a special dog hotel stop where they feed and water the dog, they let the dog out for potty and even clean the cage if necessary. On both flights the very nice staff reassurede that my dog was indeed on board and that the pressure and the temperature is fine for my dog in the luggage department in the belly of the plane. When I arrived to Mexico I was surprised to see that the kennel of my dog was replaced by a bigger one, to make her feel more comfortable. I am so so so pleased with their services and their sensitivity to people who fly with dogs! Thank you so much KLM!

    Pleasant experience

I flew with my 10 week old pup from Prague to San Francisco through a 3.5 hr layover at Amsterdam while whole journey took about 16 hrs due to a delay resulting from a technical issue. The flight attendants were cordial with the pet. I lucked with a pet loving traveller in my row and an empty seat beside me on my first leg and the flight crew moved me to a similar setting on the second leg of the journey after finding the person in my initial assigned row had allergies. All in all a positive experience
