Entry Requirements
Complete the following entry requirements to travel to Japan with your pet:
- Pets must be microchipped for entry into Japan.
- Make sure your pet has received the rabies vaccination twice or more after the microchip is implanted. The second vaccination shot or booster rabies vaccination needs to be given no more than 31 days apart after the previous vaccination and within the effective period of the previous vaccination. Pets must be at least 91 days old at the time of rabies vaccination. After the second vaccination, blood (serum) sample shall be taken from dogs and cats for blood test (neutralizing antibody titration test against rabies).
- Pets must be continuous residents in a designated region since birth, for at least 180 days immediately before export to Japan, or a continuous resident in a designated region since being directly imported from Japan.
- Be sure to notify Animal Quarantine Service at the airport in Japan at least 40 days before your arrival that you plan to bring your pet.
- Pets will need a health certificate as well as other attached forms to be filled out by a licensed veterinarian. Pets must also be found to be free from any clinical signs of rabies and to be free from any clinical signs of leptospirosis.
Quarantine Information
Dogs and cats must be inspected by Animal Quarantine Service upon arrival in Japan. Importer must apply for import inspection to Animal Quarantine Service upon arrival in Japan. If no problems are found in the import inspection, an import quarantine certificate for the dog or cat will be issued. Animals will be subject to detention quarantine for up to 180 days or will be returned if conditions are not met.
