Beautiful dog friendly beach area

Kruse Park Dog Beach

This park is gorgeous. Has lots of boardwalks going up to the top of the dunes. The dog beach area was closed off in 2020 due to erosion and high water levels which basically eliminated the beach area. It also broke part of the staircase going down to the beach so they closed it off.

If the water levels go back down in 2021 I'm sure they will be open again. Its a favorite spot of the locals. Technically they require your dogs to be leashed there but almost no one actually leashes. So its basically a dog park type environment where unruly off-leash dogs will charge your dog (happens to me almost every time). If you have a playful dog this shouldn't be a problem, but if your dog isn't into that nonsense you may want to arrive in the morning when its not too busy.

Great food and entertainment

The Deck

I actually live near The Deck and my husband has played there with bands. They have live bands outside on the weekends so make sure your pup is cool with that. I love the food and my husband said the bloody mary's are the absolute best around. We don't take the dogs there just because mine are big and one is reactive, otherwise we would. Dogs are not allowed on the public beach right next to the restaurant, but if you go just down the road there is a really large portion of the beach that is designated as a dog beach. Best way to go to that is to go to Norman Kruse Park, which is maybe a mile to the south.

Beautiful

Hocking Hills State Park

One of my favorite vacation spots. Lots of people walking dogs here. Not every dog will have perfect manners so just remember to be mindful of others. The walkways can be narrow and even slippery in many areas too so if your dog is really jumpy they could seriously injure themselves and you. If your dog is a leash puller, get some sort of lead that prevents that or avoid because a pulling dog would make many areas very dangerous. Otherwise happy trails and incredible beauty!

Oh almost forgot it’s so pretty that there are usually a lot of people there and can be a little crowded. Make sure your dog is cool with that.

Pretty cool place!

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

I admit I first learned about this place from ghost hunters. Then wound up marrying a guy who decided to start a nonprofit to raise awareness and to save and repurpose old Kirkbride asylums. He was familiar with this one and has been here and mentioned that he was pretty sure they were ok with dogs. We have 2 Weimaraner that are still sort of in the wild puppy stage (1 year old) so we knew they might be a little tricky to deal with. Thankfully it was ok and everyone fawned over them. One of my dogs is afraid of new people and a little reactive so we made sure to muzzle him just in case. The asylum is full of dark spaces, stairwells, and corridors that can be frightening for some dogs. Also since you’re groups are with multiple people you need to be mindful that your dog isn’t in anyone’s way in all those tighter places. Just be polite to others and make sure your dog is well behaved so they don’t ruin anyone else’s experience.

Decent place, clean, great views.

Holiday Inn Staunton Conference Center an IHG Hotel

I’m starting to love Holiday Inns. I’m finding that most are pretty dog friendly and this one was no exception. Check in was easy and front desk girl was nice. I asked for a pet friendly room and wasn’t even asked how many dogs I had. She just mentioned the $25 pet fee.

The pet friendly rooms are at the back of the hotel at the edge of a golf course. Our view was gorgeous! Lots of green area around the back of the hotel too for dogs to do their business. They had water bowls for dogs by the entrances. I have 2 weimaraners and their size was no issue. My only minor complaint about the place is that our bathroom door was sticking and had to be yanked closed or shoved open. Everything else was totally fine, clean, comfy, and fairly roomy. Never heard barking or noise from other guests, but it was also a slow time because of Covid-19. Still saw a few people here and there but still quiet.

Eh. “Dog friendly” is used loosely.

Red Roof Inn Columbus West - Hilliard

So this is kind of a trucker type place as someone else mentioned. You enter from the outside of the building and park near your door. No worrying about taking your dog down hallways and maybe getting weird looks or anything. The room we had was fairly small, just 2 double beds and mini fridge/microwave. Bathroom was tiny and the sink was outside of the bathroom. The flooring was hard which is of course nice for any cleanup. My room smelled like marijuana half the night from a next door neighbor smoking it outside. Lots of smoking all along the sidewalks and upper balcony so hard to get away from it. At least the room seemed pretty clean though.

But dog friendly? Eh. I wouldn’t say that. Maybe if your dog or dogs are tiny. The front desk girl wasn’t super pleasant and when I said I needed a pet friendly room she asked how many dogs and how much each weighed. Said mine were over the weight limit (2 weimaraners) and I asked what she expected me to do about it? She let it slide but then was like well next time know only 1 is allowed. Um ok. I’ve stayed at 2 holiday inns on this trip and they were extremely dog friendly, no weight restrictions and minimal pet fees. I wouldn’t recommend this place unless your dog is small and you just need to pop in late at night just for a bed.

So nice! Very dog friendly.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Weston an IHG Hotel

Check in was easy. Mentioned I had 2 dogs because I wasn’t quoted the pet fee and wasn’t sure if the room would be a pet friendly room. Was told all the rooms were pet friendly and it was all good. We did get a ground floor room with easy access to a small side yard where we could take the dogs to go potty. The room was pretty spacious too and comfortable. Wasn’t asked about the sizes of my dogs or anything and I have 75 and 45 lb Weimaraner. Our stay was during Covid so no hot breakfast or anything but lots of packaged food to grab in the morning on the way out. We will for sure stay here again the next time we visit Trans Allegheny (also very dog friendly!!).
