Great off-leash swimming beach
Pillar Point HarborThis beach was a little tough to find, but once we did (easier if approaching from the north), it was wonderful. Great swimming, not too crowded, ok for pups to be off-leash.
Messy/muddy areas
Baylands Nature PreserveThe marsh smells exactly as you would expect and after an hour there my pup's little legs were coated in dark brown smelly mud. We rinsed her paws off 4 times before getting in the car, but the smell persisted until a real bath. There is no place for the dogs to swim and rinse off the muck. Limited free parking spaces were available, as was a water fountain and restrooms. Would be good for taking a dog for a run if kept out of marsh.
Steep walk to beach, big waves, beautiful
Poplar BeachThis is an on-leash beach with a steep walk from the paid parking lot (was $2/hr, cards only) down to the sand. The waves were too big for my 45 lb pup to swim, but the views were beautiful. We even saw 3 dolphins playing close by in the water!
