Pleasantly surprised

La Quinta by Wyndham Houston Southwest

Wasn't expecting a lot considering the neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. So yes, the building is a little older but the owners seem to have made an effort to modernize it. Every front desk employee I interacted with was pleasant and a pleasure to meet. The lobby area is nice and warm and had some decent vending machines. The elevator, unlike another reviewer, worked fine for me. My room was close to the elevator yet there wasn't a lot of hall noise. You will hear the freeway though. It's not that bad especially if you grew up in Houston like I did. I sprung for the executive king room so I could get the fridge and microwave. They both worked fine. The bathroom was clean and functional. The wifi was quicker than I expected and the Samsung tv while older, will let you pull their hdmi cable and plug in a Firestick or Chromecast. The room itself was much larger than I expected and doggo loved it. The main part is carpeted but entry area and bathroom are not. It's a great spot for food and water bowls. Only a few complaints that aren't deal breakers. One, the bench at the foot of the bed had some sketchy looking stains on it. Two, the tv is set rather far from the bed considering it's smaller size. And the one thing that was super frustrating is that the tv had the volume limited to 1/4 volume so you could barely hear it. If you bring a standard Samsung hospitality programmer remote you will be able to remove the limit. On an extra note, on my second day I smelled someone smoking. It's a non smoking hotel. I told the front desk and that amazing woman literally went door to door on my floor to find and stop the problem. She should get a raise!

Roaches and mildew

Red Roof Inn Houston Brookhollow

Even having prepaid it took forever to check in. Clearly the woman running the desk hated her job. From the minute you step of the elevator it smells like a snoop dog concert. Which is fine except it totally defeats the non smoking room idea. The first room I was sent to had the door propped open with the latch and the bed had been slept in. Nope. Had to trudge back down and get assigned a new room. Then.... Roaches. Enough that I was like, ok this is a problem. Top it off with mildew in the shower and the place having a sketchy vibe. Nope. Once was enough. The only decent thing is that the floor wasn't carpet perfect for doggo. Note: doggo will stink of cheap schwag when you get home...
