Visitors are reminded that no pets are allowed on State Park beaches between April 1 and September 30, they should always be on a leash under six feet, and all mess should be cleaned up after them. Along the shore and among the forest, you'll notice a stand of tupelo trees, also known as black gum, from the pet-friendly nature trail that weaves around the shoreline and among the swampy marshes.

Set along Portland’s iconic Baxter Blvd on Back Cove, this park has a 3-mile multi-use path, athletic field, horticultural gardens, fitness course, and wildlife viewing areas. The tree-lined stone dust and paved path boasts views of the skyline while hugging the edges of a tidal estuary basin. There are abundant opportunities for birding, biking, running and walking. The Back Cove trail was first visioned by James Phinney Baxter, mayor of Portland in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The Back Cove trail was completed in 1917 after a combined effort by many Portland residents.
