Fort Walsh National Historic Site Fort Walsh National Historic Site is dog-friendly. Technically, it's part of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and is also the site of the Cypress Hills Massacre. This working fort will take you back to the 1870s, where whiskey runners once roamed, and to a Canadian period dealing with the aftermath of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Pet owners should be warned that there will be loud bangs at certain times as reenactments and parades take place. Fort Walsh National Historic Site is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. You and Fido can enjoy the nine-mile Prairie Marsh Wildlife Drive Auto Tour and hike the Prairie Marsh Boardwalk trail which is just under one mile in length and rated as moderate. Biking, wildlife viewing and hunting are also popular. To protect nesting birds and other wildlife, pets must be leashed and remain on the Prairie Marsh Wildlife Drive or Prairie Marsh Boardwalk trail except when used for hunting during the appropriate seasons and in designated areas of the refuge. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their owners on the Matapiiksi Trail, which leads to views of one of the park's famous rock columns that are known as hoodoos, or the Battle Scene Trail next to the Milk River.
