For Fido’s next adventure, why not launch him off dry land to escape the crowds? Charter a ship with a captain, or be your own skipper, and set sail to explore coastal landscapes and stunning waterways with these pet-friendly boat rental companies. Although some outfitters may provide one, it’s worth bringing your dog’s own canine life jacket.

Lake Lanier was created from the installation of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River in 1956. Located just 30 minutes north of Atlanta, this recreational hot spot is Georgia’s fourth-largest lake, and Aqua Sports Adventures gives up to two pups the chance to explore the water with their humans. The rental company is located at Holiday Marina, so before you set sail, you and your furry captain can grab lunch or dinner on the patio of The Twisted Oar. Dogs are welcome on pontoons, deck boats and bowriders for an additional fee.

If you don’t want to stray too far from the water, spend the night at this luxurious lakeside home with your pooch.

With Float On, you and your pup can rent a boat and explore Lake Austin, a reservoir of the Texas Colorado River. Your rental includes a boat, a captain to drive so you can relax on board, floating lily pads that dogs are also allowed on, and a cooler package to keep Fido’s popsicles frozen. Every watercraft in their fleet welcomes dogs for a $40 fee, and Float On loves having them on board. The dock is located near Emma Long Metropolitan Park which offers gorgeous river views along many pet-friendly trails, if Fido needs to stretch is legs after a day on the water.

Back on dry land, tickle the ivories, dive into the pool and relax at this secluded Austin getaway.

All of their charters allow pets on board for free. Before you set sail, grab a meal on the patio of Mac’s Place to take in the sea breeze and waterfront views while Fido chows down on chicken and bacon strips.

Pet-friendly space adventures might be a way off, but you can still view astronauts blasting off from NASA Wallops Flight Facility on a day trip with Daisey’s Island Cruises. Trips depart from Curtis Merritt Harbor in Chincoteague, a gateway to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. Daisey’s also provides a chance to see ponies running wild on the island, as well as sunset and dolphin adventures. Binoculars are available for use on board and dogs float for free. End your adventure on the harbor with dinner at The Pearl, where you can admire more water views while you dine on crabcakes, soups, flatbreads and more.

Overlook the water you just explored from this cute waterfront cottage and spend more time enjoying Chincoteague.

Dogs can join the crew for free at All Aboard Adventures. Captain Tim has over 40 years of experience on the water, so you know you and your pooch are in safe hands. Climb aboard during the months of December through February to catch a glimpse of California gray whales migrating from Alaska to Baja California, or catch them on their return home from February through April. If Fido needs to get his zoomies out before you board, let him run leash free at Noyo Harbor Beach.

Whales aren’t the only giant things California is famous for. Stay among humongous redwoods on 10 secluded acres at this beautiful home.

Gather your canine and crew for a boat adventure with Captain Alex Inshore Charters, which offers a variety of dog-friendly cruises. Cast a reel on a fishing charter, go on a dolphin hunt, or sip and see Charleston’s Harbor and Fort Sumter from the water. Another fun journey is the shark tooth hunting expedition, where you and your pup can search the shore of a barrier island for those dental treasures. Your guide, Alex, will help you hunt and give you an ecological tour of these beautiful, unspoiled islands.

Rest Fido’s sea legs at Charleston Creekside Inn, a waterside pet-friendly hotel that offers a complimentary breakfast and dock where you can cast a line and reel in a big one. Four-legged guests will appreciate the grassy area on site for their calls of nature.

Afterward, toast your fantastic boat trip with a beer at The Mitten Brewing Company.

Let Fido play in the grassy yard of this dog-friendly, waterfront cottage near downtown Saugatuck afterward.
