Long-term residents all appear to be hustling something—themselves or some substance. Our “non-smoking” room reeked of locked-in cigarette stench, the bath had burns from cigarettes often set on the side. NO MINI FRIDGE or microwave?!? I’ve never slept in a room without those before. No shampoo, conditioner, or lotion—just a bar of soap for the sink and another for the bath. Flies everywhere. I was traveling with my son and small dog—we brought in EVERYTHING from our car, taking no chances of tempting the residents. The heater worked, but the grill and the side were broken. A burned-out room, plywood hammered over the window, scorched mattresses in the parking lot, marked “Substandard” and “Uninhabitable” by the county. I should have paid a little more to stay in a nicer hotel nearby. The one positive: both office clerks I dealt with were friendly, professional, and warm—even if the office was closed and I had to speak with them through a window in the laundry room. All washers and dryers were labeled “out of service.” No breakfast. Just. Don’t.
