Classic old motel, which incorporates several historic trading post structures into the complex. Staff were very courteous and helpful. Place is older, which was actually a nice change from the usual boring, boxy chain motels. Room was very clean, and had everything we needed. Grounds are shady with large tress, grassy areas for walking the dogs, and benches, chairs and tables for sitting outside. We were there ahead of the high season, so the place was pleasantly quiet. Really enjoyed staying there, and will definitely stay again when traveling through the Chinle area.

Thunderbird Lodge is located on the Navajo reservation inside Canyon de Chelly National Park. The “up top” trails are all dog friendly. I saw reviews online that this wasn’t such a great place to stay, but don’t believe it. It’s not a four-star motel, but it’s clean enough and updated. And the staff is very friendly. And my dog absolutely loved being up on the bluffs looking down at the canyon! The only way you can go down inside the canyon as with a Navajo guide. You have to come up with a strategy for taking care of the dog, because dogs aren’t allowed in the canyon on the tours.

Will definitely stay here again. The motel is older but room was clean and everyone was very friendly. Our pup could stay in the room as long as he was in his crate, which is no problem for us.

It was very easy to walk the dog around the grounds. The location was good, especially for visiting the Canyon. Room was clean and comfortable.

The rustic, southwestern feel of the place more than made up for the funky water pressure. Great place to launch your adventure into the national park. Staff was great.

A bit of a challenge if you are traveling on your own as you cannot leave your dog in the room unattended and the restaurant does not allow dogs. Great proximity to Canyon de Chelly (which also does not allow dogs except on paved roads/parking areas). Hotel was a bit tired and could do with some upgrades. Perfect location. Comfortable enough for an overnight stay.

Super accommodations, extra friendly staff and very convenient to Canyon de Chelly. Beds are comfortable. Our room was clean and having a cafeteria on site was a plus. Highly recommend this property.

Very comfortable spot and so close to the Canyon de Chelly. Pity Thunderbird did not have the same arrangement as a local tour company for dog-sitting while we went on the tour of the canyon. We had to drive back out to the Best Western for that, and they're not even dog-friendly!

Nice rooms near Canyon de Chelly. Older, but well maintained. Tours meet out front. Cafe. Wifi spotty.

Safe Stay: Thunderbird Lodge has enhanced cleaning and safety measures in place. Masks and hand sanitizer are provided to guests, and rooms are disinfected between each stay and sealed after cleaning. Social distancing measures are in place, as well as physical barriers between staff and guests. Contactless check-in and check-out are available. Each room has a 24-hour gap period between stays, and hotel staff are required to wear masks.
