A 2-Star Hotel With 4-Star Prices

Kinzie Hotel

For what is labeled a "4-Star Hotel," I was extremely disappointed. Lets get to the good stuff first.

1) The staff. Incredible and incredibly nice. Love each and every one of them. They are all extremely professional.

2) Location - You can't ask for better than being close to the Pink Line for Riot Fest, or the Red Line to go to Wrigley Field for a game or a concert... or Guaranteed Rate if that's your cup of tea.

3) They cater to dogs. Their love for dogs is duly noted, and tbh 1 of only 2 hotels in the area that really does so.

The "pet area" they claim is a small hallway-sized lot next door to the hotel. While the area has bags and all, there's also a camera to watch your every move. Kinda creepy.

4) The complimentary happy hour they have. The Rose hit the spot. Very good and highly recommended.

5) Housekeeping responds to messes rather quickly. That said, they will not respond to any messy situation unless the front desk alerts them, so keep that in mind.

Now to the bad stuff. The room... my word was I disappointed, especially with how much the room costed. The only real good thing about the room was the fact the room had outlets just about everywhere. Well done there.

That said, I expected 4-star accommodations, especially from all the good stuff downstairs, and all I got was a "Travelodge" and disappointment. A vanity mirror, an extremely small room with a King-sized bed and shabby Wifi does NOT qualify as a 4-star accommodation. I even turned off the Wifi JUST to get service in my room. In all honesty, I felt like the view was the best part of the room.... and from the 4th floor, the view isn't that much.

The bathroom was something I would find in a Travelodge, which is what extremely concerned me. It looks like either the room was newly plastered with wallpaper or someone had a baby chalk up the bathroom on the walls. Then there is a rusty bathtub faucet that never got cleaned to begin with. That was honestly the icing on the cake. For a 4-star hotel, I expected the Ritz Carlton and all I got was an over-expensive Travelodge. Tbh, there are likely better hotels around, like the Virgin for dog lovers. But if you want a cheaper alternative, the Kinzie is perfect. The staff is the one that steals the show otherwise.

Best Hotel in Chicagoland By Far

Staybridge Suites Chicago-Oakbrook Terrace an IHG Hotel

I will say this with all honesty: This is the first time I didn't have to worry about my dogs in Chicago. The treatment is wonderful, as is the grassy areas outside of the hotel. That said... still, bring your dog bags. There wasn't any at the outside receptacle advertised in their introduction. And keep in mind, there is only one wastebasket for dog waste outside, and it is off to the side. It isn't convenient, unless you are literally stationed over there. Outside of the local law enforcement staring me down throughout the whole time when I was walking my dog, it wasn't too bad of an experience, especially compared to the rest of my recent stays in Chicago. With that in mind, its certainly something we are considering for our future Chicago visits.

Hotel, excellent... Neighborhood, not so much.

Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace Hotel

I knew this place would be a disaster from the get go... But I still insisted anyway. The hotel service is immaculate. They don't mind about the dogs and all of that. The perfect hotel, outside of servicing the animals with bowls or anything of that nature... I wish they did, but that's fine. The problems lie outside the hotel grounds. The park is a good 10 minute walk away. The "grassy areas" are on a side street. You'd have to look for them. Luckily, since I lived in Chicago in the past, that wasn't too difficult...

That said, the neighbors are rather strict about the neighborhood dogs out there. Some are rather judgmental if you have a big dog. Some people are nice, but it isn't the friendliest area for dog walkers. They don't take too kindly on pet relief out there, and some areas are gated off as a result. What it comes down to is --- the entitlement is beyond disgusting there. If you don't fit in with the neighborhood and smaller dogs, they don't welcome you or your animals. It's expected as it IS Lakeview and all, but it's still ridiculous.

Still On The First Night And I'm Disgusted

SpringHill Suites by Marriott Chicago O'Hare

I'm literally in my room now posting this... not a fan of this place already. I chose this hotel under the expectation that I'd expect exceptional service and beautiful rooms. Being on the BringFido app shocked me, but I figured why the heck not... First thing I noticed was the "dog area", if there was one. There isn't. We had to go across the street from the hotel just to get the dogs to do their business. There are no bags provided. No treats. Nothing.

The shower felt good, but that's the only thing good about it. Then, while I enjoy a nice time with a friend at the restaurant downstairs, I get a phone call about my dogs being loud .... AT 8:30 PM .... you know, while it's still day out. Then I go downstairs to the lobby, where while the staff did state the policy, they also were making a suggestion that I take my dogs literally everywhere I go, even to my business appointments because of their whining and such. Forgive me for having dogs with me for heavens sake. I will suggest that this hotel be removed from BringFido. They do not seem to cater to dogs whatsoever, unless there's a charge involved.

Frankly, I'll be honest. Even after the stay ended, I was still nervous about being inside the room because of the dogs potentially barking (other people were making noise elsewhere and no one complained about them), and I should never be.

Amazing Place

Staybridge Suites Miamisburg an IHG Hotel

For dog lovers, every part of this hotel is thought of... from the park and walking areas around the hotel to even the fact the grocery store is across the street. This hotel has it covered. There are also two wastebag locations on-site as well, in case they are needed.

The staff welcomed our two daughters with the fact they said they are "Pet friendly". The girls also love it here. The bed is comfy and they love sleeping on it. Everyone in the hotel greets them with a smile and love saying hello to our furry friends. It's really a good place to stay. I love it here, and I'm sure the girls do too.

Amazing Park

Puptown at MargatePark

This park is one of the nicest places around. Very much a community park for those in the area, but outside dogs and their humans are always welcome, no matter who they are.

Each owner there keeps watch on their dogs, but also are on the lookout for everyone else's. If a dog gets a little crazy, the owner walks their dogs out.

That said, this is one of the most popular parks in the area. Decent sized, and no matter what time of the year it is, Puptown gets popular with other dogs.

Water and bags can be supplied at times, but don't rely on it in the winter. The community keeps it up most of the time.

Outside of that, the park is well-gated and is an awesome outdoor park.
