Toy Aussie (on the edge between a small & a medium sized dog) spends too much time alone with our work schedules, so we bring him with us out and about whenever we can. He's a little standoffish with other dogs.

6 Bones If We Could

A Lazy S Place Guesthouse

Where to start? The views are phenomenal. Mags is an excellent communicator and has truly thought of everything. We brought our usual "dog works" but the only thing not already here was dog food. Kennels (huge and big,) plenty of dog blankets and towels, food and water bowls, harness, and a Mud Buster are conveniently together at Doggie Central.

The kitchen is truly stocked: flatware, plates, bowls, cooking utensils, containers, pots and pans (plural!) and knives (also plural) that are actually sharp. Say you're coming in late, and you require your coffee a particular way in the morning. (No judgment, as that is 100% us.) There's K cups and ground coffee, filters, 2 types of creamer in the fridge, and sugar, stevia, and Splenda. You really can wait until the next day for a supply run.

The hiking trail took a beating with bad storms not so long ago, but we still enjoyed a couple of hikes, and got back safely, even with doing a bit of trailblazing. Comfort and the nearby towns are lovely; check them out and reserve time to enjoy the property (hiking, yard games, dog run, fire pit, front porch dining, sturdy and safe back deck, or the wine deck just down the road a piece). If you're rained in as we were for part of our stay, there are books, board games, TV, and reliable Wi-Fi. (Some phone reception was spotty during storms...so what, we were on vacation!)

I'd say the dog-friendly bar has been raised, but that wouldn't be fair. A Lazy S Place goes above and beyond! We can't wait to come back!

Staff very dog friendly

Holiday Inn Knoxville-West I-40 & I-75 an IHG Hotel

Our dog made a lot of friends when in the hallway during our midweek stay here. The hotel was quiet, but we suspect it could be a bit noisy if there's an event going on. (This seems a likely spot for large family parties, etc.) The room was bright, as the blackout curtains were a little bit short, and the gap under the door let a lot of light in as well. We didn't try the restaurant in the hotel. We tried, but the menu we found online was out of date, and the restaurant does not welcome dogs. By the time I finally found the current menu buried on the restaurant website and was able to download it, Dog Dad had already ordered Door Dash. We didn't bother with the on-site cafe in the morning.

No Trouble in Room

Candlewood Suites Texarkana an IHG Hotel

We stayed midweek and had no trouble with noise, the appliances were present and functioning, and our dog was allowed "everywhere." We only used the elevator when loading in and out, but it was nice to be able to bring him with us (unlike another hotel on this trip.) The full kitchen was especially nice considering this was one of the cheapest out of our 4 hotels on this road trip. I'm giving this hotel 5 bones, but other review sites, it would be less. The hallway carpets (especially the stairwell landings) were heavily stained and worn. Whether the very large number of puppy puddle evidence was due to dogs who couldn't hold it until getting outside or due to lazy dog owners not bringing their dogs all the way out during bad weather (or whatever else) over the years, we'll never know. We've stayed in some truly 5 out of 5 rating hotels with our dog, but on the Southwest to Mid-Atlantic drive, we've grown to lower our expectations. Super dog friendly and easy to get around. The price was definitely right, and every staff member we interacted with was friendly.

We'll try again

Extended Stay America Suites Memphis Wolfchase Galleria

They were very welcoming upon arrival, and the man at the front desk had great information when we asked about restaurants & delivery. We were given a "pet inside" magnet to put on the door, which we welcomed. It's a little run down, but a pristine and newly renovated place isn't as likely to welcome dogs. Pets are allowed everywhere except the elevator and the breakfast room. The pool wasn't open, but I'm guessing that and the exercise room are also off limits to pets.

In the morning, there was no one at the front desk and no signs of life in the breakfast room at 6am. We were told at check-in what breakfast includes, and that it's from 6-9. I tried calling the desk from our room; no answer. There were still no signs of life in the lobby by the time we left at 6:30. Despite the no-show staff, we'll give this hotel another try the next time we make this drive. Maybe the employee had an emergency. We make this 3 day each way drive a couple of times a year, and this is the 2nd hotel we're willing to return to.

No need to compromise

Rails Cafe at the Depot

We've been to a lot of dog friendly restaurants since our little guy came into our life, and this has been the best one so far. Not only was the outdoor patio shaded and comfortable, it was also attractive. They brought our guy ice water in a branded dog bowl which they also have available for purchase. There is a dog menu, and the menu for humans was varied, there is something for everyone at this restaurant. The food was excellent... be sure you save room for dessert because that was downright phenomenal. We did not go for the dog cookies that are available, but he could have had dessert, too.

This is obviously a place people go for special occasions. It was about 50/50 with people dressed up fancy and dressed casually. We were not uncomfortable wearing our travel clothes. It appeared everyone is treated to the same friendly and attentive service. How amazing to have a restaurant of this caliber that is also dog friendly!

Super dog (and kid) friendly

El Jardin

Dogs are greeted with a bowl of water (iced during this hot August day) and are very welcome on the covered patio. There's a huge play area for kids, and the food was excellent (I loved the ceviche.) They have a full bar, too. Definitely worth the short and beautiful drive from the center of town!

Patio Seating

El Jardin Mexican Restaurant

Staying nearby on a long road trip, we could walk over here and the covered patio was not too crowded. All the tables are 4 tops, so big groups would be a challenge. The food was good (we prefer salsa that isn't firey hot) and service was great. We've brought our dog to some restaurants that offer a water bowl for dogs. This one did not, which is why they didn't get 5 bones.

Meh

Quality Inn Kingston Springs

We chose this place because they both took dogs and had trailer parking. Lots of other guests had dogs, and we were lucky to arrive while there was still trailer parking available. There was a large gap under the door where weather stripping should have been, it took forever to complete any interactions with staff (checking in, asking for an additional - and also threadbare, mismatched - towel.) It was convenient to have a restaurant that allows dogs in their outdoor seating area right across the street. We did not stick around for breakfast which starts at 6:30. The bathroom door had no latch and wouldn't stay closed, was visibly dirty, and had a hole in it, plus the toilet seat hinge was broken, causing it to slip from side to side off the edge of the bowl. Both of us had headaches the next morning which seemed to have been caused by the pillows. On the other hand, we paid about a quarter of what we would have in Nashville proper that weekend when all we needed was a place to sleep for the night.

One bone less for breakfast

Quality Inn Troutville - Roanoke North

We chose this place for being dog friendly (only $15 pet charge) and having trailer parking. It met those needs and we felt reasonably safe. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the fridge and shower were better than we expected (though definitely out of date.) The upstairs room was easily accessible for dog walking, though our non-smoking room was behind prime smoking area, so those with serious problems with cigarette smoke might want to skip this inn. The dog run is fenced on 3 sides, the 4th is heavy with shrubs and has a very steep drop off.

The lobby has a sign that reads "Absolutely No Pets." I get it, other guests might not be comfortable with everyone's dogs, but for a dog focused site, I can't give them 5 out of 5 since pets can't be unattended in the room and aren't welcome where breakfast is served. (We each went separately, but solo travelers wouldn't have that option, so 4 out of 5, recognizing you get what you pay for.)

Skip This Noisy Spot

Days Inn by Wyndham Forrest City

We were able to park our truck & 20 foot trailer, and they were great with our dog. Check-in staff was friendly, and the room seemed clean but the fixtures, tub, etc. are probably original and very worn. (Probably scary If you're not used to seeing 35-year-old faucets and such.) It was noisy both from the interstate and people coming and going all night long. The security lock inside the door was broken. A check-in we were told breakfast was from 6:00 until 9:00 but when we walked in at about 6:10, the only person in there looked annoyed to see us and there wasn't even coffee available. Reviews on other sites were very between five stars and one star. I figured I'd put one on this site and let you know exactly what I thought. Please learn from my mistakes!
