- StephanieJul 10, 2023By now you know there aren't any dog-friendly trails, but...
The animals there own the place and don't care about our furry family members. It's really a safety issue more than anything. We knew ahead of time we weren't going to hike with them IN the park other than around Apgar at Lake McDonald. However there are a lot of national forests nearby, as well as a great dog park in Whitefish. Our local city parks offered up ample room for them to run around and even splash around. Meanwhile, we drove through Glacier. Would I rather hike? In some places, yes. But honestly, that drive through was great, and the little walk around Apgar was pretty, too. It'd be great if they could designate a dog area, and that would rate 5 bones. But I think if you know what you want to do and plan ahead, this is still a worthwhile vacay with the dogs.

I was a bit upset I couldn't bring my pup out hiking with me on the trails in Glacier National Park You see it is not like any other National Park. I took and early morning hiking up to see the sunrise over Avalanche Lake. I rounded a bend and was within 100 yards of a mother grizzly and her two cubs. I quietly backed down the trail. In Glacier National Park you have a great chance of encountering grizzly bear (and not wolves too)... much more than in any other tourist laden location I've ever seen. I am so glad my pup was not along or he may have startled the grizzly or been considered as food. Glacier is beautiful but not worth possibly losing my pup over. In my 7-day camping trip there, I saw bear 6 times,
and saw one moose. The park is incredible and there are a number of multi-day backpacking trails (Only one road cuts through the park) but as for a place to enjoy with your pup, you are wisely limited to roads and campgrounds. People do ignore the rules and have created dangerous encounters and their scent brings hungry bears closer in.
There is a reason the rental car companies offer bear spray at the Glacier International Airport.

With all the trails available at this park, I think it's sad that a few trails are not designated as dog friendly. My rating is not based on the park in general.

Understandably, dogs are not allowed on the hiking trails but we were able to take our dog on the bike trails which were still really pretty! We were also able to take him by Lake McDonald and get some really great pictures!

We brought our dog to Glacier. She is blind and diabetic so dog kennels are not an option. After spending a week in the Glacier area we found a few dog friendly places. Although dogs are not allowed in Glacier, Bowman Lake and hike around the lake is pretty remote and there were dogs on the beach there and on the hike around the lake. We also went to the Northern Lights Saloon and Home Ranch Bottoms near Bowman and they both allow dogs in the outdoor areas which was awesome!
- MikeMore than a year agoReally cool but...
Don't bring your dog here. They really, really don't like them!

Glacier was fantastic and gorgeous, even though we could not take our dogs hiking with us. The closest kennel was this great place called Columbia Mountain Kennels. Our pups were very well taken care of. Rain was expected and I warned them that our dogs are really terrified of thunder, but like an idiot I forgot to leave their thunder jackets. These people sent us a text during an incredibly intense thunderstorm the second night to let us know that they had brought our two inside to sleep in their room with them and their own dogs. I was able to really rest after that, knowing that my pups were not terrified away from me. That, my friends, is amazing customer service. And they did not charge any extra, they did it for the dogs' comfort and our peace of mind. I wish I lived closer so I could use them all the time.
