Nice but needs improvements

La Quinta by Wyndham Shawnee

The Good: Hotel was newly renovated, clean, comfortable, OK breakfast. The Bad: For their pet policy, I had to sign and initial of a full page of disclaimers, including: "I represent that my pet is petite," "All pets must be contained to guest rooms only," and "Pets must not be left alone in the room during my stay." ALSO, not only did they not assign us a first floor room, but I specifically noted in my reservation that one of us was on crutches and we needed a first floor/accessible room. The hotel gave us a room that was as far from the elevator as possible! And they did not greet us as BringFido guests - I had to mention it. I really appreciate clean, pet-friendly hotels, and there were a lot of dogs there, but hotels should follow their own policies so we know what to expect ahead of time.

Somewhat disappointing

Stone Hill Norman Trademark Collection by Wyndham

We arrived after 8pm, and quickly realized that the desk clerk was not a "regular." First of all, he did not greet me as a BringFido traveler, and when I mentioned it, he was totally clueless, and said that they had not received a notice of the booking from BringFido (unlike all of the other BringFido hotels I've stayed in). So he had selected a 3rd floor room; when I told him that a first floor room was guaranteed by the hotel on BringFido's website... again, clueless.

So then he started searching for a 1st floor room, and finally "located" one (PS: I don't think they were busy -- it didn't seem like the rooms near us were occupied). The room we ended up in did not have 2 queens, as I had reserved, but a king, so my traveling partner had to share the bed with me and my 2 Chihuahuas; not a huge problem, but not what we had planned. Then, one of the empty rooms near ours had an alarm clock start going off at around 2am, and it didn't stop until around 6am (I was too tired to deal with it -- put my pillow over my head).

In the morning, I sought out the daytime desk clerk, who seemed much more on the ball. She said the overnight guy was their Operations Mgr (learning about the desk clerk position), and he had actually told her about the situation. She knew about BringFido, but also didn't seem to know that the hotel itself had that first floor room guarantee. She did agree to refund the price difference between the two rooms, and apologized profusely for the situation.

Aside from all of the above, the hotel was very clean, had vinyl plank flooring, the beds were very comfortable/firm, and the breakfast was very good (real scrambled eggs), served by an attentive cook. I'd definitely stay here again.

Don't look too closely

West Plains Motel

I don't know if I was given a "dog room" but it didn't look like photos on the web! The motel is typical 1940's-style, and the bathroom was obviously original equipment, as the tub floor was almost black with age, and the mirror looked like it came out of a prison. The carpet was also decades old, and my two Chihuahuas, although well-trained, were far too interested in smelling every inch of it. Also, the neighborhood seemed pretty sketchy; I didn't feel totally safe while walking dogs in the grassy areas. The only problem is that this area has very few places to stay with pets that don't charge ridiculous fees. I'll probably try to bypass this area when planning my next drive.

OK for an overnight stop

Whitten Inn

Typical 50's-style motel, spartan furnishings, but vinyl-laminate flooring made it especially pet-friendly, and very clean. No shampoo provided, so didn't use shower. Front desk clerk was very friendly and helpful. Grateful for a place to stay that didn't charge pet fees in an area with few choices.

Retro-style Motel

Interstate Inn

This is a classic, 50's style motel. The rooms were clean, and the staff were all really friendly and helpful. One thing to note is that in addition to their reasonable pet fee, they will put a $50 hold on your card, which is released when they check out the room and find no damage or need for "deep cleaning." It was indeed released as promised. No frills, no real breakfast, but a dog-friendly place to stay that was much appreciated.

Highly Recommended!

Desert Inn Tucumcari

Located right on historic Rte 66, this hotel was a great find. The staff were super friendly, knew my dogs' names, and were very welcoming. The hotel itself was on par with a Hampton Inn, including a full breakfast, and also had an indoor pool and hot tub. Will definitely stay here again when passing through this area!
