A respite in a chaotic town!

Tom & Earl's Back Alley Grill

We had been driving up in the mountains that day admiring the fall colors and even got to hike with our dog on the dog friendly Gatlinburg Trail. On our way back into town, we hadn't eaten all day so we stopped here for a mid afternoon meal. The town was horribly busy and we had little hope we'd get a table here but we got lucky. We had an adorable and friendly waitress. My husband and I both ordered the Denver's Top Shelf Lit (basically a Long Island Ice Tea) which definitely had alcohol in it which is the way we like them. We ordered the wings to start. They were good, quite tastey but in our opinion a little small in size as we are use to meatier ones (especially when they were advertised to be bigger). My husband had the burger and it was big and juicy. I ordered the fried bologna with pulled pork sandwich. I've NEVER in my life had fried bologna but know it is a southern thing so when in Rome...IT WAS INCREDIBLE. I couldn't even eat the whole sandwich and had to take half of it home. It was insanely delicious. The fries were also excellent. When we were ordering our meals, I started to ask if there was something I could order for our dog and the waitress right away said they could grill up a chicken breast or a hamburger patty. I ordered the hamburger patty thinking it was going to be a kid's sized. Nope. Same patty as what was on my hubby's sandwich. 8 ounces for $5. What a bargain. We took half of that home too for our dog's enjoyment another day. We couldn't have been more thrilled with this place, especially when the town was overrun with families because it was the schools' fall break. Definitely a place to go!

BEAUTIFUL setting!

White River Fish House

So yes, this restaurant is part of the Bass Pro Shop so it is a chain, but the menu is very diverse well priced. We had lunch on the beautiful outdoor patio on a Monday and there was only one other table. You sit quite far out into the River when you are on the deck and it is gorgeous. Fishing boats and kayakers float by on this quiet river. There even is a zip line next door that provides viewing entertainment. This restaurant is all about the view, sitting outside on a beautiful deck, and decent food. Considering some “dog friendly” restaurants give you a bistro table on the front sidewalk of a busy street with no view, this restaurant wins.

Rough start to our lunch

Royal House Oyster Bar Restaurant

I had read the reviews for this place and we wanted to try it. The food was delicious. My hubby had the fried shrimp plate. The shrimp was coated crunchy but the shrimp was soooo tender. He loves his fries crispy and they were. I had the taste of New Orleans which was a small soup bowl of four of New Orleans' staples: etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo and red beans and rice. All was SUPER delicious. I had the Voodoo Juice cocktail. It was too sweet for my taste but if you like that kind of drink then it would be fine.

But it was our waiter that saved the day. The hostess was not welcoming at all and it was clear she did not want to seat us. I didn't mind sitting at the open doors/windows where we were suppose to sit but she made me walk with my dog outside around the building to our table while she had my husband walk through the restaurant. When we sat down, she came over and told me to move my dog, that he had to be on the sill plate, not inside at all. It was extremely hot outside, in the 90's. My dog wouldn't have it. I couldn't get my 47 pound long haired Australian Shepherd to move.
The hostess kept repeating. I finally flat out asked her if she wanted us to leave and she said "you can do that but you need to have your dog outside". Our waiter appeared at that moment, a friendly older man with a pony tail and told us we were just fine the way we were. She disappeared and he took care of us superbly. Everyone at the bar was loving on our dog. He was an asset to the place. It is just a shame our beginning was so rocky. I would have given 5 bones had we not had the hostess situation.

One quirky note about the restaurant, we got carded (we are in our 60's). And he meant it. It wasn't a senior joke. I didn't have my ID on me (we walked a lot and for security reasons I didn't bring it). All the "rules" of this place made me think they have to walk a fine line for some reason.

Absolutely outstanding!

Oceana Grill

We had a bad experience our first night at another "dog friendly" recommended restaurant but this one gets a full 5 bones. It was extremely hot outside but we were fully expecting to get seated outdoors for our dinner. To our delight, they put us indoors. In air conditioning! We were waited on right away by an extremely friendly waitress named Eugenia. She made some recommendations and oh my goodness, she was spot on. My hubby had the special which was a fish dish with crab meat topping and substituted the greens and mashed potatoes for cajun fries. His meal was heavenly. I had a blackened shrimp po'boy sandwich and crawfish etouffee as a side. YUM YUM YUM I had a unique martini (can't remember the same but it was delicious) and my hubby had the bloody Mary which he liked too. This is a restaurant I would definitely come back to again and again. It was the best restaurant we ate at during our entire stay in New Orleans.

It was a sad experience.

New Orleans Creole Cookery

Let's start with the good...we ate dinner there and the food was OUTSTANDING. I had the Gumbo YaYa and Creole Pasta. My hubby had the Creole Pasta also and a wedge salad which was a nice, generous portion. Like I said, the food was outstanding and that is why I gave this restaurant at least some stars.

Now for the bad. We were seated outside near a back corner. NO ONE came to wait on us. It was hot, we were dying of thirst and no one even came to give us water. All we had was a menu, no tableware or even condiments on the table. Many wait staff were bustling around us, waiting on every table but would not even make eye contact with us.
It was like we were invisible. I don't know how much longer we would have waited but I finally grabbed someone and asked to be waited on and to give us some water, please. We placed our order and again waited a long time. By now, we had been at the restaurant a very long time and even our well behaved dog started to get antsy. It was super hot, and there were no fans. We were shocked when our food showed up. They did not serve our food in courses. Everything came at one time! We had a two seater table and our food barely fit. We had to ask for everything.
