Cabin on the Hill

Reading reviews is a part of the vrbo selection process. This cabin received many positive reviews while we dismissed one and two stars as outliers. The beds were comfortable and clean. The location excellent. Information about the water source would be helpful. We like rustic cabins, but grotty better describes the unit. We left after our first of two nights because the cabin was unbearable.

The cabin itself is unclean with worn furniture castoffs, grimy cowboy kitsch, inoperable lamps, soiled floor coverings, and sooty cobwebbed walls. The cabin construction is shabby and several features are unserviced, non-functional, or absent. Every architectural feature is askew. The roof leaked some time ago, but the interior damage has not been repaired. The current roof leaks in at least two places where the additions join the structure. A stairway from the deck to the ground is falling off the house; unrepaired, access is blocked by two repurposed barriers.

The deck and railing are rickety. The roof over the sunroom is missing. The front porch has holes in the floor. Many of the window shades do not adjust. We could not find any smoke alarms. Abandoned personal care products and condiments remain in the bath and kitchen. A show stopper was the mouse who ran through the living room. Not safe for humans or dogs. Reviews indicate that the cabin is warm in winter, and families enjoy it. There are wall heaters and a wood stove. Thankfully there is a fire extinguisher.
