Keep expectations low
La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Thousand Oaks-Newbury ParkThe low rating was because the hotel was understaffed and basic cleanliness and maintenance were neglected. Our party had two rooms. Those in the other room had a decent experience. But my wife and I arrived at a room with a strong smell and a dirty towel on the bathroom floor. We requested a room change, but we were told that this could not be done because all of the rooms with two beds were rented. We were also told that nothing involving room maintenance could be done after hours because all of the housekeeping staff had gone home, and that housekeeping could not be done the second day of our 2-day stay because 24-hour notice was required for housekeeping.
They backed down and actually did have someone come in and do some cleaning. Their claim to be full did not quite match with the many empty spaces in the parking lot, although the pieces fit together if "full" means "we got money for as many reservations as we could get for today." The overall impression is that this hotel tries to provide rooms and amenities on a shoestring operating budget, and if anything goes wrong with your experience they do not have the staff to do anything about it.
