Amicalola Falls State Park

Leashed dogs are allowed at Amicalola Falls State Park, a pet-friendly natural space in Dawsonville, GA. The waterfall the park is named for is the main attraction, as it is 729 feet of beautiful cascading water, and the third tallest east of the Mississippi River. There are also many hiking trails you and Fido can explore. Pet parents should be aware that some of the trails leading to the falls include metal grate steps to make them non-slip for humans, however canines may find these challenging. Please keep your pup on a leash no longer than 6 feet and remember to clean up any messes they leave behind. Visit Website

    Beautiful falls

After reading other reviews about the steps and metal spike-like gratings, we decided to drive to the upper parking area and walked the east access trail (West Ridge Falls Access). Short and easy walk to a beautiful view of the falls. There is a metal “spike” grate on the bridge overlooking the falls but our dog did ok with it. If your dog is used to wearing booties, that would solve problems with much of the surfaces if doing the long trail. At the Top of Falls parking area there’s a little picnic area and an overlook of the falls.

    Beautiful scenery and great exercise

Amazing views of the mountains and nature. Stairs from the top of the fall to get down for a better view of the falls. Dogs need to be fit to get up (had to carry the one pup going up), but it is breathtaking

    Great Location, Hard on Pups

We took our Puppy Pato here. He LOVES hikes. He usually still has so much energy at the end of our hikes. He still made it through this hike, all the way up and down, but he was VERY tired afterwards and the morning after I can tell he is still a little tired and sore. The majority of the hike is up steep steps with metal grating, which was rough on his feet. We saw lots of pups having to be carried up and down. We had a great time, just be careful if you don’t have an active dog, or a dog with tiny feet!

    Nice hike

Perfect for moderate hiking and our Charlie loved it! FYI the stairs are very steep and metal grating. If you have a small-medium pup, you may need to carry him and some people didn’t leash their large dogs. We took an alternate more peaceful trail up which was more enjoyable for all of us. Nice gift shop with bathrooms too.

    Things to know

We hiked to the Amicalola Falls with our 11 and 7 year old terriers, my sister brought her 9 year old Shiloh Shepard. The hike was much more strenuous than we’d read and it’s further than 1 mile for sure. You’re going over lots of rocks and gnarly tree roots and some high steps. They say you can take the stairs but the stairs are grated so none of us could take our dogs down the stairs going back . Our dogs did ok but I think there are lots of other hiking alternatives in the area- I’d personally avoid this one.

    Hike along waterfall

My dogs had a great time at this park. Staff were friendly to the dogs. The hiking was great, strenuous. We got a good workout. Stairs were a bit scary for the dogs , but they handled it. No swimming.
