The carpet in the room was badly stained. The door frame of our room's door was bent and scratched, like someone had used a crowbar to pop the door open once or twice. Breakfast was sad -- no cereal, no forks, no spoons. A waffle was made then eaten using two knives. While walking out of the motel fifteen minutes after checking in, I (female carrying a non-shedding dog) was asked by nicely dressed man WITHOUT ANY NAME TAG which room I was staying in. I responded with, "I don't tell people where I am staying or where I live." I turned to leave. He asked, again, more loudly. I refused to answer, again, stepping closer to the door. He asked, AGAIN, even more loudly. I refused, AGAIN.
Finally, he mentions that he is the manager and asks me to go into the office with him. (???) In the office, he explains that he asked which room I was in since I came from upstairs with my dog, and they do not usually have dogs stay upstairs -- only in certain rooms on the first floor. I pointed to the desk clerk that assigned me the room, gave my room number, and said, "She put me in there. I didn't request it." I offered to be moved to a different room. The manager apologized for how the situation escalated and said that I did not have to move rooms. I responded, "Maybe you wouldn't realize this since you are not female, but asking a female where she lives and/or is staying should not be answered for safety reasons, especially since nothing identifies you as the manager."
I did not apologize for being evasive. No context was given for answering his question until deep into a shouting match. Next time, INTRODUCE YOURSELF (Hello, I am ___ , the general manager here), EXPLAIN WHY YOU ARE STOPPING THE GUEST (I noticed you came into the lobby from upstairs with your dog; we normally do not have dogs stay upstairs. ASK WHICH ROOM THE GUEST IS IN (May I ask which room you were given?), and OFFER THE GUEST A DIFFERENT ROOM TO MEET THE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES OF YOUR MOTEL.
