Great location, shabby lodgings

Gold Beach Inn

We had wanted to stay at the Pacific Reef Hotel right next door, where had stayed previously and really liked it (also dog-friendly), but they had a 2-night minimum that we weren't able to do. So, we booked what I believe was called a "Family Cottage" with the Gold Beach Inn. When we got there we were told that we and our dog had been placed in a cottage at Ireland's Rustic Lodges next door, which evidently the Gold Beach Inn now also owns. We checked-in after dark and couldn't identify which cottage was ours, as they are very poorly marked with names and numbers.

Our cottage wasn't marked at all, and its porch light was burned out. Had to get out of the car and try our key in the door, with our headlights shining onto the unlit porch, to see if it was the right place. Our cabin was really worn and shabby, inside and out, with blown-out light bulbs, beat-up Venetian blinds that looked 40 years old and didn't work, sash windows that stuck, dings in the walls, etc. We're good sports and don't mind a rustic experience, but this place just felt depressing. The location is certainly great, the front desk staff were very pleasant, and the price was very low, but in this case we got what we paid for. Won't be going back if they wish to put us in one of those cabins again.

Great place for dogs and people!

GoodLife Cafe and Bakery

This was such a great spot for us and our pooch that we had breakfast here both mornings of our stay in Mendocino. It has a large, covered outdoor area where dogs are welcome, and a varied menu to please everyone in your party. The salted caramel latte is really good. There is also a little gift shop corner inside with souvenirs and some artisanal treasures. Highly recommended for you and your doggies!

ICM Restaurant

This place has a large outdoor deck where dogs and their people are very welcome. Good food and friendly staff who really seem to like having dogs around.

Wonderful for dogs and their people

Inn at Schoolhouse Creek

My husband and I loved our stay in the Garden Cottage. It has a small private deck, safely enclosed for our dog, and the common grounds include a huge meadow for doggies to run around and play safely with no roads around. The warm welcome that we and our pooch received was so appreciated. We had initially planned only to stay here for one night as a stopover on a road trip to Oregon. When we saw that there was a minimum 2-night stay, we said OK, let's do that. After spending a full day and a half in Mendocino, and at such a charming place for travelers and their dogs, we are already planning a trip back here as our destination, and will re-book at the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek, for sure. A+ rating!
