Best Dog-Friendly Brewery

The brewers at Smuttynose Brewing Company understand the importance of a loyal pooch. In fact, they take their pups to work every day to keep them company during the brewing process. Visiting canines at The Granite State’s best dog-friendly brewery may run into the resident brew dogs while they explore the outer tasting room, hang out on the restaurant patio, or gather around the warming fire pit. Smuttynose shows more love for the canine community with their award-winning offering, Old Brown Dog. Olive, who belonged to the co-owners of the company, sits elegantly on the label to entice dog lovers everywhere to pick up a six pack. During fall, take your dog apple picking at nearby Applecrest Farm Orchards.

Let your designated driver coast to the coast for a night at The Seascape Inn.

Located in the heart of White Mountain National Forest, Franconia Notch State Park is an ideal spot for hiking with the whole family. Leashed dogs are welcome on trails throughout New Hampshire’s most dog-friendly state park. Take the Bald Mountain and Artists Bluff Trails for epic views of Cannon Mountain and Franconia Notch, or the Basin-Cascades Trail, which leads to Kinsman Falls. Experienced hikers and pups can trek the nine-mile Franconia Ridge Loop for beautiful waterfall views.

Outdoor enthusiasts can camp at nearby Crazy Horse Campground. Other pups will delight in a good night’s rest at Old Maltaise Farm.

All aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad, which offers two pet-friendly train rides through the White Mountain Range on the border between New Hampshire and Maine. Departing from North Conway, the Iconic Notch Scenic Train Ride is a five-hour trip that offers dramatic mountain views and crosses Frankenstein Trestle and Willey Brook Bridge. If you don’t have time for a full-day adventure, New Hampshire’s most dog-friendly attraction also offers shorter tours, like the Bartlett Excursion Train Ride, which rolls through the Saco River Valley in under two hours. Leashed dogs ride for free in coach cars on all trips.

Keep the quaint times rolling at the Spruce Moose Lodge and Cottages. Take a stroll around the gardens of this quiet retreat, and check out the stream where Fido can paddle and play.

Most Dog-Friendly Campground

Beneath the towering pines along the New Hampshire coast, Wakeda Campground welcomes both dogs and their human families for an escape to the quiet wilderness. The on-site Mike Hambleton Memorial Dog Park is a highlight for furry campers at The Granite State’s most dog-friendly campground. Fido can tackle an agility course, enjoy the fire hydrant and water fountain, and park his human on one of many benches while he plays. Don’t worry, humans can have their own fun on the 18-hole miniature golf course. Two dogs of any size are accepted at tent, RV sites and camping cabins for no additional fee.

Best Dog Park

Does Fido want to walk in the pawprints of his founding “fur fathers?” Make a splash at South Mill Pond Dog Park, New Hampshire’s best dog park, located in the historic town of Portsmouth. Pups who love a dip can dive into a pond from the fenced portion of the park, and then mingle with local canines during one of the meetups that are regularly held here. For more off-leash fun in the area, drive to nearby Fort Foster Park and explore the extensive trail system, old military fortifications, and sandy beaches.

Share a comfortable night’s rest at Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown Waterfront. This nice pet-friendly hotel has a grassy relief area to make late-night pee breaks a breeze.

Top Trail to Hike With Your Dog

Formerly the home of The Old Man of the Mountain until the unique natural landmark crumbled from the rock face in 2003, Franconia Notch State Park in Lincoln remains a worthy place to visit with your pooch. Experienced outdoor adventurers can test their skills on the Franconia Ridge Loop, the top trail to hike with your dog in New Hampshire, and one of the most popular hikes in New England. This difficult trek is nine miles long and includes ascents up Mount Lafayette, Mount Lincoln, and Little Haystack. For an easier journey, clamber with your canine along the Whitehouse Trail and return on the paved bike path.

Pet-friendly Airbnb cabins are popular among families traveling with pups. This cute cabin has a fenced backyard with a hammock you can swing in while Fido roams.

Top of the Ridge Farm Bed and Breakfast in New Durham is a pet-friendly farm stay and New Hampshire’s best pet-friendly B&B rolled into one. Four-legged innkeepers, Chelsea the St. Bernard and Moose the Golden Retriever, love welcoming friendly dogs into their beautiful home. Canine guests can stay in the Sergeant Libbey Room, a large space facing the front of the property with sliding doors that open to a large private deck and steps that lead down to six acres of meadows and forest. Pups receive a dog bed, bowls, plastic bags and extra towels at check-in.

Top of the Ridge Farm Bed and Breakfast allows two dogs for an additional fee of $45 per pet, per night.

Can’t Miss Dog Event

For breathtaking views of the White Mountain region during the festive season, ‘pawsengers’ should climb aboard a Christmas train ride with the Conway Scenic Railroad. Santa’s Holiday Express is an hour-long seasonal journey for families to enjoy along Conway Branch. Santa and Mrs. Claus ditch the sleigh and arrive by train to delight the passengers on board. Or, buy tickets for the Bartlett Holiday Special, which rolls through the Saco River Valley in under two hours. All four-legged passengers receive a green ‘Doggy Ticket’ to keep as a souvenir.
