Stroll along 1.4 miles of trails at New Mexico’s most dog-friendly state park, including the Clayton Dinosaur Trackway, one of the best dinosaur track sites in the world. You’ll see more than 500 fossilized footprints made by at least eight different dinosaurs over 100 million years ago. Continue your adventure on dog-friendly trails that pass through rolling grasslands, volcanic rocks, and sandstone bluffs, and paddle a kayak or canoe on the 170-acre recreational reservoir.

Pets are welcome to join you at the 26 campsites at Clayton Lake State Park Campground. If you don’t feel like “ruffing” it, the Best Western Kokopelli Lodge is just a short drive away.

White Sands National Park has to be seen to be believed. Take your shoes off and walk barefoot with your best friend through the rare gypsum sand dunes of New Mexico’s most dog-friendly national park. Hike with your hound between the markers along Alkali Flat Trail, one of the biggest dunes in the park. The best time of year to stop by is during spring or fall, but summertime visitors should plan to arrive early in the morning to avoid the heat or at sunset to watch the sun fall majestically behind the dunes.

Located on Route 66 near Old Town Santa Fe, Rancheros De Santa Fe Campground is known for its scenic, natural setting. If he still has energy to burn, explore Cerrillos Hills State Park or Hyde Memorial State Park before cuddling around the campfire and watching the sunset on the horizon from your tent or RV campsite. Fido might even meet the campground pups during your stay. Dogs of any size are accepted for no additional fee.

If you’re sharing a weekend in dog-friendly Santa Fe, it’ll be hard not to spend the entire time exploring Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park, one of the largest dog parks in the country and the best dog park in New Mexico. Spanning 138 acres of New Mexico backcountry, you and your four-legged adventurer can explore miles of trails through arroyos and over sandy hills. Take a break to admire the incredible views across Santa Fe and the surrounding mountain ranges. The park is not fenced, but Fido can roam comfortably on the trails without approaching the outer perimeters.

After exploring every inch of this monster dog park, Fido will need some much needed R and R at the Inn at Vanessie. Canine guests receive treats at check-in and have easy access to all of downtown’s highlights.

Canines keen on beautiful views will love hiking along the 2.5-milke Osha Trail in Cloudcroft. This loop trail in the Lincoln National Forest is open year-round and provides hikers on two legs and four with beautiful views of the Sacramento Mountains and the sparkling gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park. Visit New Mexico’s top trail to hike with your dog during summer to catch dazzling wildflower displays and be on the lookout for horses that share the trails with hikers.
