Best Dog-Friendly Brewery

Even if you haven’t heard of Beer Hound Brewery in Culpepper, you’ll recognize the names of the most popular pulls on draft. All the craft beers are borrowed from famous dogs of history and the silver screen, including Volt, Fang and Duke. Choose your favorite or get a whole flight of famous furballs and enjoy it inside Virginia’s best dog-friendly brewery or on the pet-friendly patio. Your pooch will receive a treat of her own and can wash it down with a bowl of water. If seeing Fido eat makes you hungry, feast on the patio at Grill 309.

Make it a long weekend and stay in a renovated 1800s schoolhouse.

Most Dog-Friendly State Park

Just a 30-minute drive from Virginia Beach, Fido can have the time of his life at Kiptopeke State Park. Situated on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, the most dog-friendly state park in Virginia allows pets to swim off the coast on the south end of the beach. Fishing, crabbing, and boating are also permitted in this area, and kayaks and paddle boards can be rented at the camp store. Trekking terriers can cover five miles of trails, including the upland Baywoods Trail, which connects to the southern beach by extensive boardwalks over Kiptopeke’s dune formations. Watch for wildlife like deer and foxes along the way.

The Kiptopeke State Park Campground allows four-legged campers at campsites and in cabins, yurts, and the campground lodge. The nearby Sunset Beach Resort also welcomes furry guests and boasts a private beach.

Most Dog-Friendly Attraction

If you’re looking for the “pawfect” place to view fall foliage or colorful wildflowers in bloom, Shenandoah National Park in Waynesboro is the place to be. This stunning national park and most dog-friendly attraction in Virginia has 500 miles of trails, all but 20 of which allow leashed dogs. For an easy hike, walk the shady pathways on the soft ground of Fort Windham Rocks Trail. Hikers who love a challenge can take Mary’s Rock from Meadow Spring to the summit and enjoy the Blue Ridge views from the top. Don’t feel like hiking? Cruise along the Shenandoah National Park Skyline Drive, which has 75 scenic overlooks where you can pull over for panoramic views.

Put your feet up at this farmhouse at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Your pooch will love roaming around the extra-large fenced backyard while you enjoy the view from the deck.

Most Dog-Friendly Campground

Camp Cardinal RV Resort, the most dog-friendly campground in Virginia, offers fun for the entire family, including Fido. Let him run off leash in the Bark Park, a large fenced area featuring an agility course complete with a dog bone jump, tire jump, wait table, A-frame ramp, and walk & weave posts. Human campers can enjoy the water zone, jumping pillow, kayak rentals, and more. Be sure to check their calendar for scheduled events like the annual Pet Paw-ty and end-of-the-season puppy swim. Dogs of any size are welcome at RV sites and in select pet-friendly cabins for no additional fee, but they are not allowed in tent sites.

Best Dog Park

Sociable Saint Bernards will relish a visit to Shirlington Dog Park in Arlington. This popular hangout, and Virginia’s best dog park, is often full of bounding Boxers and leaping Labradors looking for new friends to sniff and play with. Consisting of a quarter-mile shaded pathway, you and your pooch will feel like you're walking through a regular city park, except there’s no need for a leash on this fenced stretch. The park’s crowning feature is a creek with sloped sides for easy access and rocks for scrambling on.

For a relaxing stay just a half-mile away, book a deluxe room for two at Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel. Spacious rooms and a grassy relief area make it a hit among canine guests.

Top Trail to Hike With Your Dog

Shenandoah National Park is one of the most pet-friendly parks in the country and includes the top trail to hike with your dog in Virginia, Hawksbill Loop. When you make it to the top, bask in 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah Valley, and the Virginia Piedmont from an amazing platform. Hawksbill Loop is just under three miles and rated moderate due to a steep incline.

If you’re searching for seclusion in the Blue Ridge Mountains, reserve the Fox Den Cabin and share ten private acres with your best friend.

Best Pet-Friendly B&B

Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blue Ridge Manor Bed and Breakfast in Cana is a welcoming setting for a weekend getaway in the mountains, and it’s the best pet-friendly B&B in Virginia. Fido will feel like he’s wandered into a dog park when he’s greeted by the B&B’s loveable pack that consists of Zeus, Athena, Thor and Loki. The four-legged residents will be happy to take him on a tour of the hilltop property nestled on 36 private acres of land. Wake up each morning to forest or mountain views depending on which room you choose, and enjoy a hearty country breakfast.

Blue Ridge Manor Bed and Breakfast welcomes two dogs for an additional fee of $25 per pet, per night.

Can’t Miss Dog Event

Dominion Energy Riverrock Festival is an action-packed outdoor sports and music festival at Brown’s Island and Historic Tredegar Iron Works. Dogs are welcome throughout the weekend, but they can also star in two of the festival’s main attractions, making the festival Virgina’s can’t miss dog event. The Filthy 5K Mud Run involves slogging through a massive mud pit, and you can enter your pooch in the Dog Wave. He will be thrilled to romp over trails, across a river, and finally, splash into the mud. If racing in the mud is not his thing, your pup can test his dock-diving skills at Subaru Ultimate Air Dogs.

The Commonwealth is a great place to recuperate after a day of chasing tails in the mud. Just be sure to rinse your pup off before he curls up in his complimentary dog bed.
